GREAT PERFORMANCE
A sunny Tuesday evening bore witness to a captivating clash at the Sports Centre as third-placed Naas played host to second-placed Newbridge Utd. The stakes were high with the runners-up spot up for grabs. The coaches had called for a fast start, and what a start it was. Within just two minutes, Naas began their assault. Riley won the ball high up the pitch and passed to Luke, who elegantly played a first-time through ball for Ben. As the Newbridge keeper rushed out, Ben, with nerves of steel, struck the ball only to see it rebound off both posts, thwarted by a dedicated Newbridge defender.
Pressure mounted as Naas showcased delightful football, with Scott Byrne and Bobby dominating the midfield. Scott McGarr and Dylan formed a formidable barrier, successfully neutralizing the league’s top scorer every time Newbridge threatened to attack.
The first half concluded with the scoreboard still blank.
However, the second half saw Naas come out roaring. They started strong yet again, forcing a series of corners. In the 5th minute, a corner from Luke caused chaos in the Newbridge defense, leading to an opportunity for Ben, who pounced on the loose ball and found the net. Joy erupted amongst the Naas players as their confidence soared.
The Newbridge keeper, seemingly in fine form, managed to thwart a series of attacks, but it was September 15 that proved to be monumental for Naas. Our keeper Noah, demonstrating lightning reflexes, executed a stunning save pushing the ball to the side, preserving the lead. A crucial moment indeed!
Five minutes later, Naas doubled their advantage when Scott McGarr intercepted a Newbridge attack. He threaded a brilliant pass through the defensive line, setting up Ben once again. This time, he made no mistake, scoring with finesse into the far corner.
With nothing left to lose, Newbridge unleashed a barrage of attacks towards the Naas goal. The sturdy back four, particularly the central pairing of Dylan and Scott, held resolutely, frustrating Newbridge’s incessant forward thrusts.
The tension escalated dramatically as Newbridge found the back of the net in the 89th minute. Strangely, the referee found an additional five minutes of injury time to give the visitors a glimmer of hope. But, the lads stood firm, robust in their defense, ensuring their victory and keeping their dreams of finishing second firmly alive.
