A sunny September afternoon in Timahoe was the backdrop for the team's first ever competitive game, with a stiff breeze taking the edge off the temperature.
Naas had the breeze in the first half, and it quickly became clear that T&S planned to sit deep and hit Naas on the counter. They struggled to hold possession and resorted to clearing long, which the back line dealt with comfortably, usually as the start of another attack.
Despite dominating the ball, Naas found the T&S defence and goalkeeper doing a sterling job, and it took ten minutes to break the deadlock. The goal deserves its own paragraph 😀
Fionn attacked down the right, reached the byline and drilled a low ball across the box. Faniel, arriving at the near post and running slightly past the line of the ball, didn't try to turn or stretch across it. Instead he flicked his heel into its path and redirected it into the far corner, à la Lee Sharpe against Barcelona in '94. The keeper, set for a conventional finish, was left completely wrong-footed. A beautiful finish and a memorable start to the competitive journey 👏
The pattern continued, with Rory causing havoc down the left. That route soon paid off as he scored a quality brace, on 20 and 28 minutes, to make it 3-0 at half time.
With the goals flowing, the players smelt more and the instinct became to go for goal themselves, when often the smarter option was a pass to a teammate in space. Something to watch going forward.
Playing into the wind after the break, the second half started the same way: the T&S keeper kicks long, the defence gathers, another attack begins.
Naas emptied the bench five minutes into the half, and a fresh Oisin made an instant impact with two goals in three minutes, a pair of smashing left-foot finishes (the second set up by Rory) that gave the keeper no chance.
At the other end, with the breeze playing a bigger factor the defence was caught too high a couple of times, letting T&S in on goal. Tadhg was equal to both. Warning signs, though probably more to do with players pushing forward to get in on the action.
With ten minutes to go Naas brought the earlier subs back on to rest the rest of the squad, and they added three goals in three minutes: Faniel (from Michael), Seb (from Oisin) and Cillian (from Faniel). At 8-0 the referee called over to say that was enough and blew it up early.
A strong team performance, with the most pleasing elements being the clean sheet and goal contributions from seven different players. The latter being a feature of how this team has created and scored goals throughout the season.
Thanks to T&S coaches Chris and Graham for their hospitality, and to referee Sid Comerford who officiated well and complimented the team after the game.
Next up is Round 2 away to familiar opponents Arlington AFC, who will prove a sterner test.
